Abstract

The author considers the potential implications if the European Union (EU) opt not to use its military to mitigate the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In the author's opinion, the possibility that the U.S. may restrict itself to a mainly diplomatic role could prove crucial in pressuring the neighboring countries of DRC to stay out of the conflict. He speculates that if Europe will not act decisively to address such crises as what is happening in the DRC, it may encounter obstacles to being a major actor in international affairs.
