Abstract

The article recalls an event when the U.S. Navy's submarine Archerfish sank the 62,000 ton Japanese carrier Shinano on the waters south of Tokyo in November 1944. The Archerfish was a 310-foot diesel powered submarine with a crew of 10 officers and 70 enlistment and was commissioned in September 1943. The article details how the submarine was able to sink the Japanese carrier. As a result of such event, skipper Commander J.F. Enright received the Navy Cross while the Archerfish was recognized with the Presidential Unit Citation.
