Abstract

The article offers information on self-injurious behavior (SIB), act directed toward one's self' that result in tissue damage. It states that SIB happens frequently among persons who have profound or severe intellectual developmental disabilities (IDD) or autism. Moreover, SIB is a cardinal symptom of several genetically connected syndromes, such as Lesch-Hyhan Syndrome, which involves a disorder of purine metabolism.
