Abstract

We measured dissolved N<subscript>2</subscript>O, CH<subscript>4</subscript>, O<subscript>2</subscript>, , and on 7 transects along the polluted Adyar River–estuary, SE India and estimated N<subscript>2</subscript>O and CH<subscript>4</subscript> emissions using a gas exchange relation and a floating chamber. High implied some nitrification of a large anthropogenic pool. In the lower catchment CH<subscript>4</subscript> was maximal (6.3±4.3×10<superscript>4 </superscript>nM), exceeding the ebullition threshold, whereas strong undersaturation of N<subscript>2</subscript>O and O<subscript>2</subscript> implied intense denitrification. Emissions fluxes for the whole Adyar system ∼2.5×10<superscript>8</superscript> gCH<subscript>4</subscript> yr<superscript>−1</superscript> and ∼2.4×10<superscript>6 </superscript>gN<subscript>2</subscript>Oyr<superscript>−1</superscript> estimated with a gas exchange relation and ∼2×10<superscript>9 </superscript>gCH<subscript>4</subscript> yr<superscript>−1</superscript> derived with a floating chamber illustrate the importance of CH<subscript>4</subscript> ebullition. An equivalent CO<subscript>2</subscript> flux ∼1–10×10<superscript>10 </superscript>gyr<superscript>−1</superscript> derived using global warming potentials is equivalent to total Chennai motor vehicle CO<subscript>2</subscript> emissions in one month. Studies such as this may inform more effective waste management and future compliance with international emissions agreements. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
