ONCE upon a time old men were granddads. There they were, benign old blokes deadheading the roses and being silly with small children. Then along came Victor Meldrew, the archetypal grumpy old man from One Foot In The Grave, and a new demographic slice was mapped in the national psyche. Personally, I've never been convinced that Grumpy Old Men are anything more than argumentative younger men gone grey.
