Abstract
- The article explores the mathematics curriculum for students in rural areas, and suggests a different mathematics curriculum design. Aside from the fact that the importance of a mathematics education diminishes if students do not plan on leaving home to continue their education beyond high school, mathematics teachers in rural areas also experience difficulties in lesson planning, such as budgets, assessment mandates, economic conditions and parental support and reluctant students. It is therefore recommended that a curriculum be designed to contain rigor by centering on student problem solving. It is also suggested that the relevance of a mathematics education be explained by connecting it to the real-life experiences of students, such as their interests and their future.
