Abstract

Information on the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol from the book "Network Protocols Handbook," Fourth Edition, is presented. The SMB protocol, which is a protocol from International Business Machines (IBM) that is used for sharing files, printers and serial ports between computers, can be used over the Internet on top of the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) or other network protocols. It is noted that the SMB protocol defines the share and user levels of security.
