Abstract

Over the last three decades, the Correctional Service of Canada has shifted towards a regime of prison management. This communication analyses two dimensions of this system. On one hand, it determines to which extent correctional practices inspired by the new penology express themselves in the discourse of the professionals in charge of offenders. While analyzing the perception of nursing personnel, psychologists and parole officers of three federal penitentiary institutions, it appears that they constantly oscillate between a rehabilitative purpose and a risk assessment objective. Their administrative tasks have largely increased and turned into a managerial know how focused on performance. On the other hand, it interrogates the ethical dilemmas they have to deal with, such as informed and voluntary consent, autonomy and individual liability. Eventually, this presentation tackles concepts such as risk, prediction and actuarial methods in the light of these professionals' representations and practices. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
