An Assessment of Order Maintenance Functions of Police in India.

Maintenance of public order has been an important issue that has confronted the criminal justice system in developing democratic nations. This paper makes an empirical study of order problems in a police district in India. It makes a quantitative assessment of the social context of the problems, nature and type of problem, frequency, response of the police etc. Through this analysis we determine how the different dimensions of police work shape the role and image of police in the administrative, democratic, and social discourse. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
