Abstract

The degree to which children grow up in crowded housing conditions is a neglected but potentially important component of social inequality and children's wellbeing. This paper uses a large sample of children from the Los Angeles Family and Neighborhood Survey to explore the effects of household crowding on a variety of child outcomes, including academic achievement, behavioral problems, and physical health. We examine the gross effects of crowding as well as the net effects, controlling for social and demographic factors. We seek to determine whether there are significant net effects of household crowding on separate components of children's wellbeing, as well as overall wellbeing. This study can enhance our understanding of how one aspect of a child's living environment, housing crowding, may affect other key areas of their life. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
