Abstract

The benefits of high status corporate identity is useful in attracting affordable and highly educated professionals from various educational streams and thereby shaping status attainment of professionals to the needs of a globalizing industry. This paper is based on empirical findings of female software professionals in India based on qualitative interviews and secondary data. The findings identify that high end professionally educated female labor which is mostly not software trained at the entry level is attracted to the global IT sector because of three factors: Firstly, high pay; secondly, international migration opportunities through employment in multinational corporations; thirdly, symbolic capital and status gained through the corporate status of the employer; and fourthly, global recognition as knowledge workers in a globalized industry on par with male colleagues. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
