Abstract

The article features "High Treason," a real history painting by John Lavery, a portrait painter in Ireland. The painting depicts the court scenes in the case appeal of Roger Casement against conviction for high treason and a death sentence on July 17, 1916 in Courtroom I of the Royal Courts of Justice in London, England. It was made as a legal record and a tribute to the case having a great significance in Irish history. However, the painting has received a lot of criticism and has embarrassed British authorities. The scenes and notable persons behind Casement's case are also presented.
