Abstract

Carpal tunnel syndrome remains the most frequently recognized peripheral nerve entrapment syndrome and, even if the majority of patients are relieved from their symptoms by the surgical carpal tunnel release, the incidence of failure in open carpal tunnel decompression varies in large clinical series from 7%to 25% [2, 10, 11, 15, 17, 18]despite Phalen's famous statement according to which 'there are few operations that are as successful and rewarding as the operation for carpal tunnel syndrome" [14].
