Abstract
- The article discusses the issues of iconography, provenance and style. The article also examines the carving techniques used in the wooden polychrome sculpture of Saint Roch. Saint Roch is the patron saint of the plague-stricken. The vestments of the saitn are of a style that was worn north of the Alps at the beginning of the 16th century. The sculpture portrays the culminating moment in Saint Roch's life and reflects the culture during which it was made. The wooden sculpture was purchased by J. Pierpont Morgan in 1906 as part of the Georges Hoentschel Collection.
