Abstract
- This article applies the Jungian psychoanalytic perspective developed by Murray Stein to the development of Marcel Duchamp as an artist. Stein maintained that modernity compromised the development of personal identity and framed his idea of the adult imago, or self identity, in terms of this fragmentation. The transitions that occurred in Duchamp's life following his arrival in New York City are framed in terms of this fragmented identity. The author analyzes the contrast between Duchamp's identity as a gambler and as a chess player in terms of the fragmentation in his life between the rational and the chaotic.
