Abstract
- The article reports on malaria, smallpox and cholera epidemics in Charleston, South Carolina in the 17th and 18th centuries. According to the author, 59 major epidemics struck the state among 1670 and 1775 which also decreased rice production. Malaria, which seemed to thrive in rice fields, prevailed in rural plantations while smallpox and cholera outbreaks happened mostly in the city because of tainted wells and open sewers.
