Abstract

The article discusses 16th-century still life painter Michelangelo da Caravaggio's work "Still Life with Fruit on a Stone Ledge." Because of the popularity of his painting, the "Basket of Fruit," or Fiscella, they question whether he had done other still life, and this brought to light his work, "Still Life with Fruit on a Stone Ledge." It is said that the painting "Still Life with Fruit on a Stone Ledge," is provocative because it was inspired by Caravaggio's love affair with a prostitute named Maddalena Antognetti. According to historian Allen J. Grieco, the erotic nature of the imagery was intentional due to the fact that, in the 16th century, fruit was often the basis of erotically-inclined poetry.
