Abstract

Nephrologists are often asked to advise women with glomerulonephritis, who wish to conceive and to participate in the management of their pregnancies. This requires an awareness both of the influence pregnancy has on the natural history of many kidney disorders, and how specific diseases influence gestational outcome. This chapter will review data pertinent to these issues and suggest guidelines for counselling and managing gravidas with a variety of glomerular diseases. First, however, will be a brief review of the changes in the renal tract which occur during gestation, the knowledge of which is important for the detection and treatment of renal disease in pregnant women.
