Abstract

The article provides information on macular surgery and enzymatic manipulation of the vitreous cavity. Components needed for enzymatic manipulation of the vitreous include vitreous liquefaction and complete vitreoretinal interface separation. Plasmin and microplasmin are allegedly able to achieve these goals without causing damage to the retina. Implications of chemical vitrectomy include relief of vitreoretinal traction, alteration of the influx of molecules and change in the oxygen levels in the vitreous cavity.
