Abstract
- The author reflects on the distinctions between literature and genre fiction. The fundamental philosophical and artistic trajectories of each style are outlined, contrasting originality with convention and popularity. The cross-over writings of Irish novelist John Branville are cited and criticized, suggesting that they fail to satisfy the niche properly. It is also suggested that perhaps the distinctions are beginning to weaken in popular circles.
