Abstract

The article reports on the restoration of the 55-mile Los Angeles River by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after a 1938 flood that killed 50 people in Los Angeles County, California. The engineers have encased the river in concrete culverts and envisioned parks with natural banks planted with willows and alders. As such, President George W. Bush has signed an energy-and water-development appropriations bill that includes $1 million to study restoring the river in August 17, 1991.
