Abstract
- The article reports on the rise of ethic nationalism due to a failed referendum in reunification in Cyprus. One year after the failure of the referendum in April 2004, the country is undergoing transformations. According to the author, Greek Cypriots rejected the reunification plan of the United Nations (UN) in the belief that European Union membership would give them a stronger position from which to negotiate a better deal. Turkish Cypriot parties and newspapers that were in the forefront of the peace movement and support of the Annan Plan say that Turkish Cypriots are under no obligation to unite with the south.
