Abstract

The article discusses how archaeologist Hilary Cool used assemblages of artifacts from archaeological excavation reports to determine food and drink habits for people in Roman Britain. She suggests elements of ancient diets conflict with archaeological dichotomies. The study of amphorae and animal remains can determine what foods were imported and types of livestock were raised. Cool discusses similarities in civilian and military diets and the consumption of beer and pork in Roman Britain.
