Abstract

The article reports on the rent-a-bike concept implemented in Paris, France, called Vélib. It was conceived by Mayor Bertrand Delanoë, aiming to achieve a 40 percent reduction in traffic by the year 2020. The bicycles are docked at 750 self-service stations around the city, and cost one euro for a day's pass. The article compares the Vélib program to an initiative by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York, and states that Mayor Delanoë's plan will seem to be more popular.
