Abstract

This paper argues that poverty and inequality increase the likelihood of terrorist incidents in a country. By the guidance of the researches in criminal justice field on poverty, inequality and crime relationship this study builds a path to examine terrorism issue. To be able to do this the study uses social disorganization theory (Shaw & McKay, 1942), anomie theory (Merton, 1938) and Marxist theory (Bonger, 1916) which have been base for explaining poverty, inequality and crime relationship. This study answers the research question of "Does income inequality, poverty level, education level, unemployment level increase the likelihood of terrorist incidents in cities of Turkey?" This empirical study uses secondary data analysis, data for the variables of socioeconomic indicators gathered from the databases of national statistics bureau of Turkey and terrorism incidents data gathered from databases of Turkish National police. Logistic regression will be utilized as statistical method for this study to be able to look at the likelihood of terrorist incidents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
