Abstract

The article discusses modernity, barbarism and collective violence. To understand the structure of barbarism in modern terms, it is important to identify social limits that differentiate between the internal and external forces which construct social and individual limits. Within the context there exist several protagonists, including the newcomer, the outcast, the tourist, and the vagabond. The difference between outsiders and insiders can be overcome through a series of assimilation rituals whereby the outsider is absorbed into the host culture. An example of this is during the conquest of the Americas during which the indigenous population were assimilated into the social pyramid that was forced upon them.
