Abstract

The article reports on the painting of William Hogarth, which features the Gaols enquiry between 1728 to 1729 including "Bambridge before a Committee of the House of Commons." Hogarth's original sketch, a monochrome in oil on paper, is now in the Fitzwilliam Museum, which took a highly critical view of Hogarth's abilities as a painter. The picture shows members of committee seated at a table and a prisoner in rags is giving evidence. However, the finished version of the painting is insipid despite an attempt to make the picture more dramatic by transforming an ordinary apartment into a gloomy dungeon.
