Abstract

I use interactions in an experimental setting to measure of the status of women in China. The parameters of the experiment are set according to the status characteristic and expectation states theory to measure the status of women as indicated by the choices subjects make during the experiment. The experiment was replicated in three locations (Wuhan, Beijing, and Taiwan) to determine the impact of economic development on women's status. The results indicate that economic development in Mainland China has had a detrimental effect on women's status and that democratic advances in Taiwan have not improved the status of women. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
