Abstract

People continue to find a sense of community rooted in physical places and spaces. Yet relatively little scholarly attention has been focused on the built environment of particular places and its role in generating community sentiments. In fact, sociologists have been reluctant to embrace physical space as an independent context that influences social behavior. Using qualitative data this paper explores the built landscape of a marginalized rural town as a context for residents' sense of community. Discussion is centered on residents' perceptions of this space as liminal and references to community. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
