Abstract

The following article aims at a better theoretical understanding of the organizational communication concept. By questioning the link between "communication" and "organization", we try to circumscribe the emergence of this concept along with its current and future directions. The first part of the article refers to the history of organizational communication; its role and place as a field of study among Social Sciences is discussed from a North American perspective. The second part reflects on the classical views of organizational communication, mainly through a functionalist approach. Finally, the third part opposes these views through a discussion on "organizing communication" (la communication organisante), where the future of organizational communication lies in the interactionist approach and in code-centred models.
