Abstract

The article discusses the solutions to the negative effect of mall declines on the community's landscape. Obsolete malls, otherwise known as "greyfields", are said to be the problem of the Congress for New Urbanism, whose task is to fix what is considered the biggest conventional development mistakes. Greyfields are the result of some or all of the following factors, small size, advancing age and disinvestment, less wealthy neighborhoods, tough competition, middle or low-end stores, and vacant spaces. They tend to be found in center cities or nearby suburbs, and the New Urbanists' challenge is to incorporate design, circulation, and mixed use into the urban renovation. One of their goals is to connect buildings to the environment and give actual addresses to buildings and storefronts.
