Abstract

This paper identifies aspects of the development and operations of a prison art program, as a series of field notes. Areas of investigation include the organization and maintenance of art instruction, participation of staff and prisoners, planning for continuous program support, training of prison arts specialists, and development of curriculum and instructional strategies for prison art educators. Observations are also made of special problems inherent in a prison setting related to time, space, confinement, and regimentation and their effects on the inmate artist and on the teacher.
