Abstract

The article features the lift bridge in Rouen, France designed by a team including civil engineer Michel Virlogeux. The design requires the lifting span to consist of two independent decks, allowing them to be lifted separately. According to Michel Moussard of Arcadis, a colleague suggested that they cross the cables over to the counterweights in the opposite tower which enabled the internal and external angles between structural members and cables to be equalized, eliminating bending moments.
