Abstract

Analysis of the geographical mobility of a random sample of the 20th century Dutch nobility shows the social and cultural features of the nobles who live in Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht, elsewhere in the Netherlands, the neighboring countries and further away clearly differ. The geographical differences within the Dutch nobility consist of the differences among the four big cities, between Holland and the rest of the Netherlands, and between the Netherlands and the three neighboring countries. This means there are still geographical differences within such a relatively "old-fashioned" elite as the Dutch nobility. These geographical differences in the Dutch nobility further support the conclusion from earlier research that the 20th century nobility is still socially relevant.
