The article features Jim Sproul, one of the most talented young hybridizers of roses. Sproul is a physician who engages in rose hybridizing for the love of it. He calls his breeding enterprise Roses by Design, which he operates from his home in Bakersfield, California. He planted his first seeds in 1988, but did not have real success until 1997. His rose breeding program had produced some wonderful exhibition roses such as the Honey Dijon, Stainless Steel and Singing in the Rain.
