Abstract

The article analyzes the literary and iconographic evidence of Herakles the Navigator. It illustrates that, as a part of his broader function as a bearer of civilization, Herakles was an inventor, patron, and protector of ships and navigation. It also perceives Herakles as a protector of mariners, and for this reason, a number of harbors of refuge in the western Mediterranean were named after him.
