Abstract

A biographical entry for British philosopher James Fitzjames Stephen is presented. He was born on March 5, 1829 in Kensington, England, and died on March 11, 1894 in Ipswich. His educational background is discussed. Stephen's most philosophical works include "Liberty, Equality and Fraternity" and "Horae Sabbaticae." He was influenced by the empiricism of John Stuart Mill's "A System of Logic," but believed that it was flawed because it paid little attention to the empirical matters of human nature.
