Abstract: A biographical entry for British philosopher Herbert Spencer is presented. Spencer was born on April 27, 1820 in Derby, England, and died on December 8, 1903, in Brighton. His family and educational background is discussed. His early interests were in moral and political philosophy, and his "System of Synthetic Philosophy" envisaged the successive treatment of biology, sociology, morality and psychology from an evolutionary standpoint.
