Abstract
- Abstract: Patients with musculoskeletal disease may present for surgery for correction of deformities or as a result of complications. Special consideration needs to be given to safe handling of the airway and patient positioning. Coexisting disease must be sought, and the anaesthetic technique (general, regional local) planned. Management of acute pain, awareness of side-effects from concurrent drug therapy and an understanding of the indications for postoperative admission to ICU or HDU is also important. Patients with acute burns present many potential problems to the anaesthetist. Airway protection due to rapid swelling is an urgent priority. Massive loss of fluid necessitates fluid resuscitation; changes in physiology and pharmacokinetics need to be considered when planning further care. Limited availability of ‘normal’ skin will hinder attempts at venous access and the siting of monitoring equipment. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
