Abstract

The article presents a study that assessed the performance of switchgrass, Panicum virgatum L. barriers planted above fescue filter strips under interill and concentrated flow and fescue alone under interill and concentrated flow for reducing run-off, sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorus loss from fallow plots on a Mexico silt loam. This study is in line with exploring the runoff flow condition dependency of the effectiveness of grass barriers and vegetative filter strips for reducing transport of sediment and nutrients. Results of the study showed that barriers combined with filter strips can be an effective alternative to filter strips alone for sites where concentrated flows may occur.
