Abstract
- I WAS like a sailor walking the plank during the third Test. I realised that if I didn't perform I might not get picked for England again. Playing for my country meant a hell of a lot to me and I wanted to keep my place, especially since I had fought my way back from a series of injuries. Little did I know I would end up playing a leading role in what has become known as the Miracle of Headingley. I wasn't originally selected for this Test because I had flu during the previous match at Lord's and didn't play in the subsequent round of county matches. But I called Alec Bedser, the chairman of selectors, to say I was only missing the Warwickshire game to make sure I was fit for Headingley, so he telephoned Derbyshire and told them to intercept my replacement Mike Hendrick's invitation to play against Australia. That's the only reason I even played. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
