Abstract

The article reports on the decision of the British Highways Agency to use glass fibre reinforced plastics to save the Dunheved Bridge in Devon, England and to avoid traffic disruptions caused by reconstruction. The bridge which spans the River Tamar was constructed in 1978. Dean & Dyball which won the bid to reconstruct the bridge, suggested a method to reduce cost and traffic disruptions. The company will replace the bridge's concrete decks with steel and concrete composite alternatives.
