Abstract

This chapter offers information on the people of Barbados and their way of life. It is difficult to upset Bajans, who have a well-deserved reputation for being very down-to-earth people. Many couples live together without marrying, and more than three-quarters of the babies in Barbados are born out of wedlock. Public education is free in Barbados, and children are required to go to school between the ages of five and 16. Many of the beliefs and superstitions on Barbados have African roots.
