Abstract

A definition of the term "assisted living" is presented. It refers to a type of congregate long-term care wherein physically or mentally handicapped residents receive help with some of the activities of daily living without health-related care. Other terms associated with assisted living include personal care, residential care, board and care and domiciliary care. Elders and their families prefer assisted living over nursing homes.
