Abstract

This article explains that the government must take the lead in developing new water resources in England and Wales if a water shortage during the 2012 Olympics is to be avoided, the ICE warned. ICE Water Board chair John Lawson said that the Environment Agency has responsibility for resources overall. It has carried out studies in the past, in 1994 and 2001, but these focussed entirely on demand management and leakage control rather than new resources. But the Agency rejected the claims and said that new resources were included in its last strategy and would be the subject of a discussion paper to be published later this year.
