Abstract

The recent anthrax cases and anthrax scares in the United States have prompted understandable interest and concern on the part of health professionals, officials, and the public. This interest comprises virtually all aspects of the disease including its possible methods of transmission (both natural and intentional), varying disease forms, diagnosis, symptoms, therapy, and prevention. With the possibility of future criminal or terrorist anthrax attacks on a larger scale now a realistic threat, members of the public are also rightly interested in national and global measures to prevent and defend against such attacks and wish to keep abreast of these efforts as they unfold. This article describes the onset of the present crisis, a brief description of the disease, some of the current efforts to deal with it, and selected Web sites that the authors consider particularly comprehensive, accurate, authoritative, reliable, up-to-date, and user-friendly.
