Abstract

The chapter provides information on a study which is an extension of a social work research on the impact of steel mill shutdowns in the town of Aliquippa in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Declines in unemployment rate were noted in 1986. Employment at the large steel mill continued to decline after 1983 and earned income tax receipts plummeted. The study closed with the identification of a pattern of community response to crisis. The study indicated that in spite of further deterioration, the community remained.
