Abstract
- The article chronicles the history of Native American media starting with the appearance of the "Cherokee Phoenix" in 1828. "Cherokee Phoenix" and other native newspapers offered alternative views of Indian life and accomplishments. However, these publications often were characterized by infrequency, primitive formats and content. Aside from the Cherokee, other Native American Indians that pioneered in journalism includes the Chikasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole.
