Abstract

The article examines foot races in which girls and women ran or walked from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The author relied upon diary entries, newspaper and magazine accounts, notices, engravings, poems, literature, and other sources to analyze these events. The article discusses six categories of events which were looked at: regular races, occasional races, wagers: races, wagers: solo, pedestrian performances, and pedestrian feats.
