Abstract
- This article focuses on annual celebrations in Woodstock, Ontario, during the 19th century that, according to the author, became the forum wherein rival social groups fought for cultural supremacy. Both the upper and lower classes inhabiting the town had adopted horse racing as a sport. The lower class version, typically flat speed trials were considered rowdy. The upper class steeplechases and carriage driving events were thought to be models of decorum.
